Artist’s Statement

I can proudly say that I am a self-taught artist. I’ve always had an interest in art, but have never had a lesson. As a youngster I enjoyed looking at the paintings in art magazines, and wishing that I could someday make pictures like those. (Robert Bateman was a God to me).

It wasn’t until 2004, while recuperating from back surgery, that I decided it was high time I learned how to paint (I couldn’t do much else at the time). So, I bought some watercolors and started teaching myself. I also joined an online artist’s community called WetCanvas about this time. I was extremely nervous about posting one of my paintings there, for all the world to see. Happily, there was nothing to be nervous about. I found them to be a very supportive group of people. They offered gentle critiques and helpful advice to me as a “newbie”. For that, I am very grateful. Joining WetCanvas.com is one of the best things I could have ever done.

I eventually graduated from watercolors to acrylics, and have never looked back. Acrylics suite my artistic temperament and painting style perfectly. I like to work fairly quickly all over the canvas, finding and refining shapes and values until the composition matches the image in my minds eye.
